About
Occupying an enviable site at the corner of Central Park West and 72nd Street, directly across the street from The Dakota, in the heart of the exciting Upper West Side, this famous 29-story twin-towered cooperative apartment building, converted in 1958, is a fine example of Moderne American Art Deco in New York City, a style distinguished by its vertical orientation. Construction began in 1929 by Irwin Chanin of the Chanin Construction Company, a few months before the 1929 stock market crash. In subtle counterpoint to The Majestics verticality are the horizontal cantilevered terraces and strips of windows at the corners, or solaria, which provide extraordinary open and exciting views of the City skyline. At the time The Majestic was constructed, the construction method was advanced, and obviated the need for corner columns in the solaria, thereby increasing what architecture critic Andrew Alpern called their sunny openness." The Majestic apartments are renowned for their large and gracious layouts, well-proportioned rooms and with respect to many, extraordinary light and views. Many apartments have been combined and there are now approximately 220 apartments and five elevator banks. In the friendly spirit of the West Side, pets are welcome at The Majestic. Subletting is permitted under exceptional circumstances only. The building is famous for its white glove service, with doormen, hallmen, concierge, porters and elevator attendants available to provide the security and services commensurate with one of the very great apartment buildings on Central Park West and directly across the street is a parking garage as well as many others located within walking distance of the building. The Majestic is near all public transportation and is proximate to the best shopping and food halls on the Upper West Side. Residents enjoy many amenities, such as an excellent gym, penthouse terrace, bike room, childrens playroom beautiful rooftop solarium & terrace and storage bins. Private storage is available at an additional monthly cost. Description provided by Cathy Taub
