About
11 East 73rd Street, the Pulitzer Mansion, is one of New Yorks most glorious Gilded Age palaces. The gifted architect Stanford White created this extraordinary tribute to Venetian baroque architecture in 1903 for the publishing genius Joseph Pulitzer, who owned, among other businesses, the largest circulation newspaper in the world. After Pulitzers death in 1911 the building lay scarcely used until the Pulitzer family, in the 1930s, with notable sensitivity, divided the building into luxury apartments. Stanford Whites stair hall and corridors, moldings and paneling, lofty ceilings and ingenious layout were carefully retained. Over the years the building, now a cooperative, has seen notable tenants and has faithfully retained the serene atmosphere of one of the grandest and New Yorks grand townhouses.
